In 1962, John B. Calhoun – a researcher who had worked in the field of behavioural science – tested the effects of carefully constructed, perfect living conditions, where No Predators Were Present, on mice population in the facilities of the American &nbsp;National Institute of Mental Health.&nbsp; Eleven years later he published a paper outlining the results of his curiosity, in which scientific method and language were interwoven with anxious projections of the societal collapse of his era. In 2022, Agata A. Sznurkowska – an emerging artist based in Rotterdam – encountered Calhoun’s aforementioned Death Squared: The Explosive Growth and Demise of a Mice Population, becoming perplexed by the collage of writing styles in his report. Later, she conducted a series of interviews with participants from fine art, economics, and STEM backgrounds in their early twenties to thirties, asking them to reflect on topics such as identity, expectations of the future, financial awareness, and agency in social transformation. These recorded conversations serve as a voiceover for a video where computer-generated mice inhabit the analogue environment, in order to draw parallels between human social comfortability and the disturbance that few accept with calmness. Violating the space-time continuum of another subject by suddenly imposing one’s existence gives rise to a sense of alienation and – in extreme cases – an exile; reactions that even the most polite apologies cannot compensate for. In a shared house, it is easy to fall into conflict - because although roommates share a common space - they still remain separate entities. Despite the shared space of the house, rooms remain separate domains with their own rules of functioning. Violating them always means implementing changes, which can ultimately cause an internal fever. Entering the space of DOMIE, we somehow invade a zone that already has new occupants: insect-like hybrids of our daily consumer habits that have multiplied through our neglect. They jump, wriggle, and crawl toward us; they are like a bad omen, reminding us of the harbinger of a new reality. In Agata Sznurkowska’s works, tiredness with the reality of consumption and production and the related cult of productiveness and self-fulfillment is manifested by the desire to hide. It is as if the works shouldn’t have existed, yet the inner need, as well as the outer requirement of creative activity, don’t allow doing anything. After all, stagnation, both in the world of art and in any other human activity, threatens social ostracism, and eventually oblivion. a series of work developed as an attempt to self-cure insomnia outside of access to conventional mental healthcare. Initially it consisted of five pillows filled with lavender and buckwheat, and a bedtime tea with custom labels. The pillows are claimed to be a tool for relaxation, according to sources such as sponsored posts and podcasts; a potential supplementary cure for insomnia –a state when naïve but gut-wrenching thoughts: existential, anxious, political, but also romance or life-admin related annoyingly receive the same kind of validity in one’s mind. In 2024 seven sleeping masks filled with lavender and rice were added. Due to allergies (developed as a self-diagnosed immune response to night shift work), buckwheat had to be replaced by rice. All of the objects were later used in "Sleepover for Insomniacs" - an overnight stay in the gallery, where participants were invited to unapologetically be unable to fall asleep together. The "Sleepover" featured a sleep inducing program:cinema screening, affect theory reading and a relaxing drawing workshop (the latter hosted by Nadine Ghandour).
